What Is the 80% Rule for Electrical Panels?

The phrase “80% rule” is often used loosely. It is not a universal statement that every panel can use only 80% of its total rating.

General educational information only. Equipment, installation conditions, applicable codes, and service availability vary. This page is not a diagnosis or a substitute for qualified electrical work.

Continuous-load sizing

In common circuit-sizing situations, continuous loads are often calculated using a 125% sizing factor when the relevant conditions apply. That corresponds to 80% loading of a suitable 100%-rated device in the applicable context.

Do not confuse circuit sizing with panel capacity

This does not by itself calculate a home’s service needs or establish a universal operating limit for every panel. Ratings, configuration, load calculations, and adopted code matter.

Get the installation evaluated

Before adding major equipment, have loads, breakers, conductors, and panel capacity assessed. Do not change breaker sizes based on a simplified online rule.

Technical note

Requirements can vary with adopted code editions, amendments, equipment listing, and installation details. Confirm technical questions with a qualified professional and the authority.

!
Electrical safety comes first

Do not remove an electrical panel cover, touch exposed wiring, bypass breakers, or work on energized equipment. Keep away from smoke, sparking, burning odors, or obvious overheating and seek appropriate urgent assistance.
